Mel B Throws Water At Simon Cowell And Storms Off America's Got Talent
Jay Dawson August 25th 2017 Entertainment
The age of reality television seems to have no expiry date. From Survivor to MasterChef, it seems like we can never get enough of it. Still, many complain that the format these days is too overproduced. The "dramas" are engineered, and all the bloopers cut out, leaving something that's about as far from reality as you can get. Those complainers might want to have a look at the latest season of America's Got Talent, where it looks like live television, warts and all, is still alive and kicking. Where even between the judges, things can go horribly wrong, as you will see in the video at the end of this slideshow...
The "Magic" Act
The episode started like any other, with the 12 contestants trying to prove themselves on stage. Then came on Demian Aditya, who had promised an "insanely dangerous" escape act to floor the judges. For one reason or another, though, his act flopped and wasn't nearly as "insane" as he had promised. So judge Simon Cowell made a joke...
Simon Cowell Makes A Joke
After each act, judges have a chance to comment on what had just happened, expressing their like or dislike. When it came to Simon Cowell, he couldn't resist dishing out some of his trademark caustic wit. "I feel like this would be a lot like Mel's wedding night," he remarked. "A lot of anticipation...not much promise or delivery."
Mel B's Reaction
At first she was shocked, and then she was furious. The act before Demian's had left her in tears, but this highly personal comment only left her fuming. She grabbed her glass of water from the judge's desk, stood up, and threw the entire contents at Cowell. He was surprised, but it looked like he'd had this done to him a couple of times before.
The Former Spice Girl
For those who don't watch the show, or completely missed the 90s, Mel B was one member of the insanely famous British girl group the Spice Girls. Selling tens of millions of records worldwide, the five girls - Mel B was "Scary Spice" - basically owned the pop charts for a good decade. After the band split up, Mel had a short-live solo career before become a fixture of the reality TV judging panel.
A Tumultuous Year
This past year, though, has been a particularly difficult one for Mel. Her father died in March, leaving her devastated and reconsidering her current career. Not only that, but a long marriage to singer Stephen Belafonte was crumbling to an acrimonious end, just as this current series was airing. Maybe Simon could have picked a better time to make jokes...
Then again, the creator and multi-millionaire producer and judge of America's Got Talent, X Factor, and American Idol hasn't made his name from being a nice guy. In fact, harsh put-downs and controversial moments are his bread and butter. In fact, they're part of the reason that people keep watching - just to see what mean thing is going to come out of his mouth next.
America's Got Talent
And people are certainly still glued to their television sets. Now in its twelfth season, America's Got Talent continues to rake in the ratings and attract thousands of eager wannabes, desperate to break in to the big time. With a top prize of $1,000,000 and a chance to headline in Las Vegas, it's easy to see why. For the audiences, too, the failures are sometimes as big of a draw as the successes.
On the last episode, there were plenty of failures, due in part to technical difficulties plaguing the set. While some performances went off without a hitch, Ukrainian dance act Light Balance weren't able to perform at all due to electrical failures. Demian also claimed that his magical flop was due in part to problems with the lighting and set-up of his act.
She Storms Off
None of that mattered to Mel B, though, who was so blind with rage that she stormed off after dousing Cowell. She was so upset, in fact, that she broke the back of her dress in her hasty departure. The other judges didn't quite know where to look, but host Tyra Banks knew exactly what to say. "This is live TV, y'all. Live TV."
Although Mel B returned for the next act, she refused to talk to Simon for the rest of the night. Speaking in an interview with Extra after the show, she labeled him "stupid" and "insensitive". "He goes and says something stupid like that, so then I got angry." She explained. "How do you know what my wedding night was like all those years ago?" Insensitive he might be, but the ratings will no doubt prove that Simon Cowell is far from stupid.
